Trainings in SAFEDAM

On 25-26 October and 7-8 November 2019 two training courses were held at the Central School of the State Fire Service in Częstochowa under the title "Use of the SAFEDAM intervention platform in rescue operations during flood hazards". The training was the result of participation of the Central School in the SAFEDAM project consortium.

SAFEDAM system monitored Polish rivers spill

At the end of May, heavy rains in southern Poland increased the risk of flooding.

Extension of SAFEDAM project

The SAFEDAM project consortium received a positive decision from the National Centre for Research and Development concerning the project extension with financial support for the new project phase. The signing of the annex to the agreement will take place in May this year. The purpose of the additional 5th phase is to extend the SAFEDAM system created in phases 1-4 between 2015 and 2019, taking into account the facilities that were deemed useful during the project and that were not included in the research project application.

Manoeuvres in Sandomierz

On June 12-13 2018 there were manoeuvres in the Sandomierz district, in which apart from the project's contractors, participated the representatives of the Voivodeship Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Kielce, District Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Sandomierz and Volunteer Fire Brigades from the area of Dwikozy commune. The aim of the manoeuvres was to check the system operation in real conditions and to show the participants of the exercises the possibility of monitoring levees using the unmanned aerialvehicle, aerial and satellite imaging.

Acquiring data from NEO3 over the test areas

On May 14 and from May 28 to May 30, 2018 flights were conducted for four test areas (Płock, Winiary, Annopol and Tarnobrzeg). Within the flights of fixed-wing UAV - the NEO3 which is the prevention platform in the SAFEDAM System, photos in real colours (RGB), near-infrared (CIR) and airborne laser scanning data were obtained. In total, data for approximately 20 km of levees were acquired and 8526 photos were taken. After the development of digital terrain models and orthophotos, the products will be loaded into the system. Next flights are planned for autumn. The results will be published in scientific journals soon.

Invitation to the seminar about the SAFEDAM project

Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography on behalf of the consortium which carries out the project invites to the seminar dedicated to the SAFEDAM project. The seminar is taking place on the 26th of March 2018 at 12:00 in the building of Centre for Innovation and Technology Transfer Management of Warsaw University of Technology, Rektorska 4 Street, room 4.01. During the seminar the following items are going to be presented: concept of the project, geospatial data which are used in the project, unmanned platform which are constructed within the project, and IT system. Additionally, the possibilities of assessment the levee condition and possibilities of supporting rescue services with SAFEDAM’s IT system are going to be put forward.

Meeting at Świętokrzyskie Province State Fire Service Headquarters in Kielce

On March 13, 2018 at the headquarters of Świętokrzyskie Province State Fire Service Headquarter in Kielce, a meeting about Safedam project took place. The aim of the meeting was to inform Świętokrzyskie Province Commander with the project and to talk about the scope of cooperation during tests in real conditions in test areas located in the Świętokrzyskie Province.

Completion of phase II of the project Safed - demonstrator System

In 19 December 2017, during the Steering Committee meeting in the Astri Polska office, a presentation of the IT system of Safedam took place. During the presentation both preventative and interventional part of the system were presented as well as mobile application and public geoportal. The IT system is the result of the second stage of the project, which was finished in December 2017. Further work will be related to the development and corrections of the system.

Test flights of the preventive platform

On 12 December 2017 the test flights of the preventative platform NEO3 were conducted. The platform is equipped with Riegl miniVUX-1 laser scanner and two cameras: RGB and NIR (optical and near- infrared spectrum). During the flights, which were conducted over the levee in Warsaw, images and point clouds were obtained. After successful test flights, the remote sensing data acquisition with the preventative platform over the test areas is planned

On 15-16 May, 2017, Institute of Meteorology and Water Management team in collaboration with MSP performed series of flight missions over Dolina Świeciechowska test area, near Annopol. The UAV platform called “Hawk Moth”, which is equipped with an ultra-light laser scanner YellowScan Surveyor and a digital camera Sony Alpha 6000, was used. Within two days, point clouds and RGB images were acquired for 6 km of levees section. Obtained data will be processed into DTM and orthomosaic, which will be imported to SAFEDAM IT system.

Scientific stage of SAFEDAM project finished

In February 2017 the scientific stage of the SAFEDAM project has been finished. A report that was submitted in the National Center for Research and Development was accepted. The finished stage has enabled the realization of the system concept, in particular the recommendations and guidelines regarding the unmanned platforms and the methods of data processing acquired with these platforms, guidelines regarding the IT system functions. Additionally, the database structure can be determined, in particular specification of the particular elements, estimation and consideration of the possibilities of optical and radar satellite images for the prevention of flood hazard. Within next two years the assumptions will be introduced in the developed demonstrator.

Purchase of RIEGL miniVUX-1UAV

In the last few days, the purchase of RIEGL miniVUX-1UAV scanner with integrated INS/GNNS APX-15 device was successfully finalised. Riegl company is a leading LiDAR sensors manufacturer all around the world. It is worth mentioning that members of SAFEDAM team are one of the first users of Riegl’s new flagship product. A very low weight (approx. 1.8 kg) and compact dimensions (243 x 111 x 85mm), which allow trouble-free mounting in a UAV fuselage, are the main elements of the purchased scanner specification. The sensor, which is characterized by max. effective measurement rate up to 100 000 meas./sec, will be part of the equipment of a fixed-wing UAV.

Comparison of ultralight laser scanners

On 18-21 October 2016 the Joint 3D Geoinfo Conference was held. During this conference results of a comparison of ultralight laser scanners were presented. These scanners are mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Within the analysis the influence of the accuracy of the sensor components on the final measurement accuracy was examined. The results indicated a significant impact of the inertial measurement unit (IMU). Because of the weight limitations, the IMU units which are a part of light laser scanners are lighter that the IMU units mounted on airborne laser scanners. Additionally, the analysis showed that the proper selection of the ultralight laser scanners can cause the accuracy increase. The results are presented in the publication available at: http://www.int-arch-photogramm-remote-sens-spatial-inf-sci.net/XLII-2-W2/87/2016/isprs-archives-XLII-2-W2-87-2016.pdf
